Put over 70 of Indiana’s best high school football players in the same room and tell them the cameras are rolling. What happens next writes itself.

The All Indiana High School Football Media Day brought together the Hoosier State’s top players to celebrate last season and look ahead to the fall — and somewhere between the handshakes and the photo ops, the competitive instincts took over. School pride showed up. Jabs were thrown. Predictions were made. And Indiana Preps was right there, mixing it up with the players and memorizing every word to revisit come November.

Consider this your official warning. Some of what was said in that room is going to age very well — and some of it is going to age like warm milk. Either way, we will be back to check.

Chase Grove Has North Central Believers. Starting With Himself.

Nobody in attendance was louder about their program’s potential than North Central quarterback Chase Grove — and honestly, he earned the right to talk.

Grove stepped into the room with full conviction, boldly predicting the Panthers would more than double their win total from a season ago. For context, North Central went 2-8 last year. Grove is talking about six-plus wins minimum. That’s not a modest projection. That’s a statement.

But before you dismiss it, consider what Grove has around him. The Panthers return a wide receiver corps that includes Division I recruits Javen Brooks and Markell Bailey — a combination of skill and upside that makes you understand why the young quarterback is walking around a media day talking like a man who already has the answers. The perimeter is real. If Grove can manage the game and get the ball to his playmakers, the win total conversation becomes legitimate very quickly.

We circled it. We’re coming back to it.

Franklin Central Is Not Shy About It.

DJ Mitchell did not come to Media Day to make friends. He came to make a point — and he made several of them.

The Franklin Central two-way standout was, in his own words, expressive about what the Flashes are bringing into the fall. And even their HCC rivals from Brownsburg were nodding along at parts, conceding that Franklin Central should land in the top half of the conference standings. When the defending state champions are giving you partial credit, that’s not nothing.

The Flashes have the pieces. Mitchell and Jayce Brewer — who was equally comfortable talking and equally comfortable doing — give Franklin Central the kind of perimeter that offensive coordinators build game plans around. Add Caiden Marsden, who looked considerably more comfortable under center this summer than he did a year ago, and transfer running back Ezekiel Scruggs bringing balance to the backfield, shifty all-purpose back Rian Frasier back from injury and the Franklin Central offense has genuine reasons to be optimistic.

The most interesting moment of the whole day came when Mitchell and Warren Central safety Kaleb Elkins started discussing what would happen if the two programs meet in the sectional round. We won’t repeat the specifics. We will say the conversation got pointed quickly, both players backed their respective squads with zero hesitation, and the people standing nearby got very quiet to listen.

Mark that potential sectional matchup on the calendar. If it happens, both of those players will have something to prove and the receipts will already be filed.

Brownsburg Said Almost Nothing. That Was The Loudest Thing In The Room.

Dami Sowunmi. Oscar Frye. Branden Sharpe. Nick Vecrumba. Four players from the two-time defending 6A state champions gathered together at Media Day and contributed approximately four combined sentences to the trash talk portion of the afternoon.

Mostly smirks. Half grins. A few knowing nods. The kind of body language that says we’ve heard this before and we know how it ends.

Frye, who committed to Illinois State and returns as one of the most decorated quarterbacks in Indiana history, looked amused by the noise around him. Sharpe, who owns several state championship records, was characteristically composed. Vecrumba, fresh off his commitment to Kansas, carried himself like a guy who doesn’t need to say much because the scoreboard has been saying it for two straight years.

The loudest team in that room was not the team with the most titles. Make of that what you will.

The Other Conversation Worth Watching

Across the room, another cluster was generating its own energy. Carmel’s rising prospect Drake Coellner, Westfield’s Caden Snow, and Zionsville’s Theo Schott were going back and forth with the kind of mutual disrespect that only exists between players who deeply respect each other and desperately want to beat each other. The specifics are between them. The outcome will be on a Friday night scoreboard this fall.

The Bigger Picture

What made this Media Day special wasn’t any single exchange. It was the collective energy of a group of players who genuinely believe their programs are capable of something this season. In a year where there is real parity across the upper classifications in Indiana, those beliefs aren’t misplaced.

North Central thinks they can double their wins. Franklin Central thinks they can compete at the top of the HCC. Brownsburg thinks they can three-peat. Carmel, Westfield, and Zionsville think they have the pieces to make noise in their respective brackets.

Somebody’s right. Somebody’s going to be very wrong. And Indiana Preps will be there for all of it.

We took notes. We saved receipts. The season can’t get here fast enough.
