Though just a junior, Ellie Morris of Bethany Christian School is making her mark as a standout girls’ basketball player. The 5’6″ combo guard from Goshen, Indiana, is a three-sport athlete whose passion for basketball traces back to watching her father play for the hometown Goshen College Maple Leafs. Morris’s journey began in sixth grade, playing alongside older girls in the Lady Chargers Basketball League, and continued with encouragement from Hank Willems to join an AAU team the following season. Since then, competitive basketball has become her main focus, shaping her skills and drive as a point guard.

“I grew up watching my dad play basketball for Goshen College. That sparked my interest,” Morris shared with Indiana Preps. “My sixth-grade year, I was asked to play in the West Noble league with eighth graders. Playing with the older girls taught me so much, and Hank Willems encouraged me to play AAU in seventh grade. Ever since then, travel basketball has been my main focus.”

Basketball stands out from her other sports pursuits, such as track and soccer, which she mainly uses to stay in shape. “I think what separates me the most is the work I put into basketball,” Morris said. “Soccer and track are fun, but they’re just not my thing like basketball. If I’m working on anything, it’s my shooting. Basketball has always been my #1 priority.”

Last season, Morris contributed 8.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Now, as Bethany Christian gears up for the 2024 season, Morris is looking to build on her natural three-point shooting and develop her skills as a well-rounded player. “My biggest attribute is my three-point shot. Shooting has always come naturally to me. This year, I want to work on seeing the whole court and making the right pass.”

Bethany Christian, who finished the 2023 season with an impressive 18-7 (5-0 conference) record and a sectional title, enters the season as a young team after graduating three key starters, including leading scorer Mariah Stoltzfus. Morris, one of the two returning starters, now steps up as the team’s point guard — a role she is ready to embrace despite lingering aches from two foot surgeries. “My foot still aches here and there, but I can’t let it hold me back. Last year, I had the luxury of Mariah being the main point guard. Now, I have to fill that role. It’s a more demanding position compared to being a shooting guard.”

Morris is determined to lead her team through a rebuilding season, focusing on setting an example for her younger teammates. “I need to guide the younger, inexperienced players. I can’t get the time I lost back from my injury, but I will continue to give it my all. My goal is to lead by example and show that it’s the little things that make a big difference.”

After securing a 37-27 victory over West Noble, Bethany Christian’s Lady Bruins return home to face the Jimtown Jimmies this Tuesday at 6 p.m. Ellie Morris and her team are ready to take the court, showing that with focus, hard work, and resilience, they can make a strong impact this season.
