Indiana volleyball has never required a big enrollment number to produce big-time volleyball.

Some of the state’s most established programs live in Class 1A and 2A, and the first two weeks of the 2026 season are already showing how deep that group could be.

Southwood has done enough to earn a spot in the overall Indiana Preps Top 15. Barr-Reeve is adjusting to its return to Class 2A and already owns another quality tournament win. Trinity Lutheran remains the measuring stick in 1A after winning consecutive state championships.

This ranking is different from our statewide Top 15. Only teams competing in IHSAA Class 1A or Class 2A are eligible, and we’re weighing head-to-head results, quality wins, strength of schedule, recent form and how teams perform when they play outside their classification.

Here is the first Indiana Preps Small School Top 15.

1. Southwood — 2A

Southwood gets the first No. 1.

There’s a simple reason: the Knights have played well enough that we already have them No. 10 in the Indiana Preps overall Top 15, regardless of classification.

That matters.

A small-school ranking shouldn’t exist in a vacuum. If a 1A or 2A program is proving it belongs in the same conversation as Indiana’s best teams, that should carry significant weight here.

Southwood has earned that distinction early.

2. Barr-Reeve — 2A

Barr-Reeve is back in Class 2A, but the expectations haven’t changed.

The Vikings swept Vincennes Rivet during the week and then picked up another notable result Saturday, beating Bedford North Lawrence 2-0 at the Brownstown Central Invitational. Barr-Reeve came out of the weekend at 6-2 according to the latest reported results.

The record isn’t perfect, but that’s where schedule matters.

Barr-Reeve has built its reputation by playing good teams regardless of classification. That approach can create losses in August, but it also tends to produce teams prepared to make long tournament runs in October.

Back in 2A after winning the 2025 Class 1A championship, Barr-Reeve immediately becomes one of the teams everyone in the classification has to measure themselves against.

3. Trinity Lutheran — 1A

Don’t mistake a couple of early losses for Trinity Lutheran suddenly disappearing.

This is still the two-time defending Class 1A state champion.

The Cougars have already challenged themselves outside the classification, including a four-set loss to Center Grove. They were also part of Saturday’s loaded Brownstown Central tournament, another example of Trinity Lutheran seeking competition well beyond the 1A level. Trinity’s official schedule confirms the Aug. 29 Brownstown tournament.

That’s exactly why record alone won’t dictate these rankings.

Until somebody in Class 1A proves otherwise, the road to a state championship still runs through Seymour.

4. Wapahani — 2A

Wapahani belongs near the top whenever we’re talking about small-school volleyball in Indiana.

The Raiders continue to play a schedule designed to prepare them for October, including this weekend’s Wapahani Invitational featuring Seton Catholic, Oak Hill, Muncie Central, Northeastern and Adams Central.

For Wapahani, the standard isn’t simply accumulating wins.

It’s being ready when the tournament begins.

5. Tecumseh — 1A

Tecumseh gives southern Indiana another legitimate 1A contender.

This is the type of program the Small School Top 15 is designed to elevate. The Braves don’t necessarily receive the statewide attention attached to the largest Indianapolis-area programs, but their body of work belongs in the conversation with Indiana’s best small schools.

Trinity Lutheran remains the 1A standard.

Tecumseh is among the programs trying to change that.

6. Brownstown Central — 2A

Brownstown Central is another team whose record needs to be viewed through the schedule.

Hosting the Aug. 29 invitational meant putting the Braves into a field that included programs such as Barr-Reeve, Trinity Lutheran, Jasper and Bedford North Lawrence.

That’s useful information.

These rankings should reward teams willing to find out where they stand rather than simply protect an early-season record.

Brownstown Central belongs comfortably inside the conversation.

7. Linton-Stockton — 2A

Linton’s early schedule gives us another team worth watching closely.

The Miners hosted Barr-Reeve on Aug. 27 and then headed to the Lafayette Central Catholic Invitational on Saturday.

That kind of schedule will tell us quickly whether Linton belongs higher.

For now, the Miners land inside the Top 10 with an opportunity to make one of the bigger jumps over the next couple of weeks.

8. Greenwood Christian Academy — 1A

GCA has quietly positioned itself as another program worth watching.

The Cougars entered Saturday at 4-1 before competing at the Lafayette Central Catholic Invitational, where they were scheduled to see Linton-Stockton.

This is exactly where early-season head-to-head results become valuable.

When 1A and 2A contenders start appearing in the same invitationals, we get much better information than records alone can provide.

9. Lafayette Central Catholic — 2A

Central Catholic belongs in this discussion because of both tradition and opportunity.

The Knights’ own invitational brought together several teams that can factor into the small-school postseason conversation.

That’s also what makes the next few weeks important.

The first Small School Top 15 establishes the board. Head-to-head matches will start rearranging it.

10. Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter — 2A

Ritter was 4-1 through the Aug. 27 MaxPreps update, giving the Raiders one of the stronger early records among the teams fighting for the bottom half of this ranking.

The next question is schedule strength.

As Ritter sees better competition, we’ll learn whether the early record translates into staying power inside the Top 10.

11. Southern Wells — 1A

Southern Wells deserves attention for more than its team record.

The Raiders feature one of the most productive early-season players in the classification. Abbie Powell led the available Class 1A MaxPreps hitting leaderboard at 5.0 kills per set with a .581 hitting percentage through the latest statistical update.

Individual production doesn’t determine a team ranking.

But having that type of offensive weapon matters when evaluating a team’s ceiling.

12. Covington — 1A

Covington is another 1A program beginning to make a case.

Meredith Wright was among the classification’s early offensive leaders at 4.1 kills per set, and the Trojans were 3-1 in the Aug. 27 MaxPreps data.

Now comes the résumé-building portion of the schedule.

13. Culver Community — 2A

Culver’s 6-1 start through Aug. 27 deserves recognition.

This is where the ranking becomes more difficult.

Six wins matter, but so does who those wins came against. Culver will have opportunities to turn an impressive record into an impressive résumé.

For now, the Cavaliers are in.

14. Mitchell — 2A

Mitchell has already played plenty of volleyball.

The Bluejackets were 7-3 through Aug. 27, giving them one of the largest early-season sample sizes among the teams on this board.

Seven wins before September deserves consideration.

The next step is collecting the type of signature win that pushes Mitchell toward the Top 10.

15. Indianapolis Lutheran — 1A

The final spot is the least settled.

Lutheran was 2-1 in the Aug. 24 data and was sitting around the Top 20 of the early MaxPreps Class 1A computer rankings.

There are several teams that could make a case for this position, which means No. 15 should remain fluid.

Two weeks into the season, that’s exactly how it should be.
