Some wins are about more than the scoreboard. Friday night in Mt. Vernon, this was one of them.
The Marauders opened the 2026 season with a 21-12 victory over Kokomo — snapping a 12-game losing streak and earning the program’s first win since Week 8 of the 2024 season. It was the kind of result that doesn’t just go in the record books. It changes the feeling inside a program.
The backdrop makes it better. Coach Kirschner is back on the Mt. Vernon sideline, and his return came with an immediate statement. A new season. A familiar face. And a win that an entire program and community had been waiting a long time to celebrate.
Indiana Preps named Mt. Vernon its Week 1 Team of the Week — because this is exactly the kind of story Indiana high school football exists to produce. Not every program plays for a state championship. Some play to rebuild. Some play to reclaim something. Friday night, the Marauders did both.
Congratulations to Coach K and every player who suited up for Mt. Vernon on August 21, 2026. The streak is over. The season is just getting started.
