Indiana Preps | On The Line — Friday Night Cap | Week 8

Week 8 did not need a long introduction.

Lawrence North changed the 6A conversation. Warren Central finished the MIC race. Bluffton turned another big test into another win.

Those were three of the loudest results from Friday night.

The Moore Show: Lawrence North Just Changed the 6A Conversation

Lawrence North had already shown this season it belonged in the upper half of the 6A discussion.

Friday night moved the Wildcats somewhere else.

Lawrence North beat No. 4 Center Grove 28-20, improving to 6-2 and handing the Trojans their second loss of the season. The difference was Zayveon Moore.

The senior ran for 230 yards on 29 carries, scored twice on the ground and added a 34-yard receiving touchdown — one week after Lawrence North lost to Warren Central. Moore’s response was exactly what the Wildcats needed.

Lawrence North built a 28-3 lead before Center Grove made the game uncomfortable. The Trojans scored 17 unanswered points and cut the deficit to eight late in the fourth quarter, giving themselves one final chance.

Elijah Hughes ended it.

The Lawrence North defensive back intercepted Center Grove with 1:24 remaining, closing the door on a comeback that had suddenly become very real.

That is why this result carries more weight than another ranked win. Lawrence North had to answer after losing control of the MIC race a week earlier. It did. And it did it against Center Grove.

The Wildcats may not control the conference anymore, but Friday reminded everyone that they can still affect the 6A bracket. Moore made sure of that.

Back on Top: Warren Central Ends Its MIC Championship Drought

The MIC belongs to Warren Central again.

The Warriors beat Carmel 42-28 Friday, improving to 8-0 overall and finishing 7-0 in conference play to clinch their first MIC championship since 2019.

That alone is a significant result. The context makes it better.

One year ago, Carmel beat Warren Central by 35 points. Friday, the Warriors flipped that result and walked away with a championship.

Keyon Thomas followed his 379-yard, six-touchdown performance against Lawrence North with another dominant night — 230 yards on 28 carries and three touchdowns against Carmel. Zechariah Wallace added two touchdown receptions.

That has been the formula for Warren Central all fall. Thomas gives the offense a player capable of taking over games on the ground. The perimeter talent keeps defenses from selling out to stop him. And the Warriors have been consistent enough to turn that balance into an unbeaten season.

Eight games. Eight wins. An outright MIC championship.

The next question is bigger than the conference. Warren Central has spent the entire season looking like one of the few teams capable of making the 6A title race uncomfortable for Brownsburg. Winning the MIC does not settle that discussion. It strengthens it.

Eight Games. Eight Wins. Bluffton Is Building a Season Worth Watching.

Bluffton is no longer just a nice unbeaten story.

The Tigers have a championship attached to the résumé now.

Bluffton went on the road and beat Adams Central 36-28, improving to 8-0 and securing the program’s first ACAC championship since 1989. It was also Bluffton’s first win over Adams Central since 2009 and its first outright conference title.

That is the kind of context that changes how a season should be viewed. Adams Central has been one of northeast Indiana’s most established small-school programs. Bluffton went into its stadium on a Friday night with a title on the line and won.

The Tigers had already shown different versions of themselves this fall — a 64-0 shutout, a 16-0 defensive performance, and now a 36-28 road win that required real offense against a real opponent.

That range is what makes Bluffton worth watching heading toward the postseason. There is less and less reason to treat 8-0 as a surprise.

Bluffton has earned the attention.

The Week 8 Takeaway

Friday did not completely redraw the state-title picture. It sharpened it.

Lawrence North reminded 6A that Warren Central is not the only team in Indianapolis capable of beating a heavyweight. Warren Central completed its return to the top of the MIC and stayed perfect. Bluffton turned an undefeated season into a conference championship and gave northeast Indiana another team that deserves statewide attention.

Week 8 gave us more than numbers. It gave us teams proving what those numbers mean.
