The conditions were not ideal. The field was saturated. The mud was real. And none of it mattered.
Indiana Preps pulled up to the Warren Central Preseason Jamboree on Saturday expecting a glimpse of what this flag football season has in store — and left with confirmation that the stars in this sport show up regardless of what is underfoot. Lawrence North, New Prairie, Evansville Mater Dei, Beech Grove, Evansville Memorial, Pike, Lawrence Central, North Central, and Warren Central all took the field for a day that became less about conditions and more about character.
Warren Central head coach and All-Star game coach Kenzie Brown set the tone for what the day represented. “Overall a great day for some backyard flag football in the mud,” Brown said. “It was great to see the girls not being afraid to get dirty, and it continues to show the relentlessness of these girls stepping up to any challenge put in front of them. A great turnout for a crowd even with the weather — which goes to show people care about this sport and are becoming more engaged with the game of girls flag football.”
The crowd showed up. The players delivered. Here is what Indiana Preps saw.
Heavynne Beard, Lawrence North — The Best Player in Indiana?
Everywhere Indiana Preps turned on Saturday, Heavynne Beard was making a play. The Lawrence North signal caller used the muddy conditions as a proving ground in the passing game — a deliberate choice that said something about where her development is heading. Everyone in Indiana already knows what Beard can do with her legs. Saturday was a display of what she can do with her arm. The precision she showed threading routes in field conditions that punished any lack of footwork or timing was the kind of performance that expands the conversation about her from dynamic athlete to complete player. The argument that she is the best player in the state is becoming harder to dismiss. Indiana Preps will be at Lawrence North tonight for the first rivalry game of the year when Lawrence Central makes the short drive over. Watch for her in a live game setting — that is where the case gets made definitively.
Izzy Like and Ella Rainey, Evansville Mater Dei — More Evidence We Missed Them
The Mater Dei duo that forced us to write our “What Did We Miss?” piece earlier this week showed up Saturday with more of the same. Like and Rainey are not just offensive weapons — they are two-way threats who make plays when their team does not have the ball. Rainey hauled in an interception. Like came up with a flag stop that changed a possession. Both performances added to the growing case that Evansville Mater Dei belongs in the top 15 conversation and deserves the attention Indiana Preps is now giving them before the season settles into its rhythm.
Brooklynne Shepherd, New Prairie — Stamped
Indiana Preps has been fond of New Prairie wide receiver Brooklynne Shepherd for a while. A few weeks ago at the Hoosier Shootout tournament she was in the overall MVP conversation. Saturday stamped that conclusion definitively. Shepherd took a five-yard out route, made two defenders miss in succession, and was gone. The mud had zero chance of slowing her down. Neither did the opposing team. She is tough, she is an elite offensive playmaker, and she is a special player — the kind that makes the people watching her instinctively reach for a notepad. She is a name every program in Indiana needs to know before this season is over.
Lawrence Central — A Future So Bright It Showed Up in the Mud
There is not a single senior on Lawrence Central’s roster. Let that sit for a moment.
What Indiana Preps watched from the Lady Bears on Saturday was a young program playing with a confidence and execution level that defied their experience. Freshman quarterback Aiyana Marshall did not shy away from the deep throw — she made it, repeatedly, in conditions that challenge seasoned passers. She moves in the pocket to avoid pressure and consistently found her targets. Those targets are sophomore Calyse Jones, who has an uncanny ability to make plays when the ball finds her, and freshman Jabraya Bond, who kept catching Indiana Preps’ attention in a short viewing window. Bond hauled in three touchdown catches. Three. As a freshman. At a jamboree in the mud.
No seniors. A freshman quarterback. A sophomore and a freshman doing the damage in the end zone. The future of Lawrence Central girls flag football showed up Saturday and made a statement that did not need ideal conditions to land.
Hi’Jirah Givens, Warren Central — The Freshman The Coaches Are Already Talking About
Warren Central’s coaches will confidently tell you Hi’Jirah Givens is the best freshman in the state. That is a bold claim and time will determine whether it holds. What Indiana Preps can say from Saturday is that Givens has our full attention after a three-touchdown performance in difficult conditions against programs with legitimate talent. Freshman years are supposed to be about learning the game. Givens appears to have skipped that part.
Tonight
Indiana Preps heads to Lawrence North this evening for the first rivalry game of the season — Lawrence Central making the short drive over to take on Heavynne Beard and the Lady Wildcats. After what we saw from both programs Saturday, this game just got considerably more interesting.
