Batesville spent 13 years waiting for another sectional volleyball championship.

Now the Bulldogs are two wins away from playing for a state title.

A week after capturing their first sectional championship since 2013, Batesville added a Class 3A regional title Saturday afternoon, defeating Evansville Mater Dei in four sets at Bloomington North.

The 25-19, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22 victory sends Batesville to the October 31 semi-state and earns the Bulldogs Indiana Preps Volleyball Team of the Week honors.

For a program that entered the postseason having already endured its share of difficult matches, the last two weeks have demonstrated something important. Batesville is finding ways to win against opponents that have challenged it.

The Sectional Set the Tone

That started at the South Dearborn sectional.

The Bulldogs had lost twice to conference rival Greensburg during the regular season. When the teams met again with a sectional championship at stake, Batesville reversed those results with a four-set victory.

The regional presented another test.

The Regional Championship

Evansville Mater Dei entered Saturday with a 21-10 record and a postseason opportunity of its own. The Wildcats also brought comparable offensive and defensive production into the matchup, making the regional less about one overwhelming favorite and more about execution in decisive moments.

Batesville took the opening set 25-19, but Mater Dei answered with a 25-21 win in the second.

The third set became the turning point. With the match tied at one set apiece, Batesville edged Mater Dei 26-24 to take control. The Bulldogs then finished the job with a 25-22 fourth-set victory.

The result was consistent with what Batesville had shown throughout its postseason run: an ability to recover from difficult stretches without allowing a lost set to become a lost match.

Haskamp, Wilhelm and Dierckman

Senior middle hitter Madelyn Haskamp has been central to the Bulldogs’ identity this season. Entering the regional, Haskamp led Batesville with 267 kills and 109 blocks. Junior libero Madelyn Dierckman had contributed 60 service aces, while senior setter Brooklynn Wilhelm had recorded 430 assists.

Those numbers illustrate the balance Batesville brought into the tournament. Haskamp’s presence at the net, Wilhelm’s distribution and Dierckman’s work in the backcourt and at the service line have helped give the Bulldogs multiple ways to influence a match.

The team’s blocking production was particularly notable entering Saturday. Batesville had accumulated 178 blocks compared with Mater Dei’s 95, a substantial difference between two programs with otherwise similar season totals.

But the regional championship was ultimately decided by the team’s performance across four competitive sets, not its statistical résumé.

Cathedral Is Next

Batesville improved to 28-7 and advanced to the Class 3A semi-state at Jasper, where Indianapolis Cathedral awaits Saturday, October 31.

Cathedral enters after sweeping Northview to win its first regional championship since 2016. That creates a semifinal between two programs experiencing significant postseason breakthroughs.

For Batesville, however, the immediate accomplishment deserves its own recognition. The Bulldogs ended a long sectional drought, defeated a familiar rival to get there and followed it with a regional championship against a strong Mater Dei program.

Two weeks ago, Batesville was still chasing its first sectional title in more than a decade.

Now the Bulldogs are among the eight teams left in the Class 3A semi-state field.

Batesville is the Indiana Preps Volleyball Team of the Week.
