Fort Wayne Snider needed one more play.
Amya Jackson made it.
With Harrison threatening late and trying to complete a comeback from 20 points down, Jackson intercepted quarterback Highlyn Newton with 1:24 remaining to preserve Snider’s 20-12 regional championship win Saturday. The Panthers are headed to the state finals.
Snider first beat Fort Wayne Northrop 20-12 in the regional semifinal, then handled Harrison to complete a two-win day and keep its unbeaten season alive.
The championship game was comfortable until it wasn’t.
Snider built a 20-0 advantage and appeared to have control before Harrison started working its way back. Newton connected with Jayda Neal for a touchdown that pulled the Raiders within eight with about a minute remaining.
Suddenly, Harrison had life.
Then Jackson ended it.
The interception was fitting for a player whose value to Snider extends well beyond playing quarterback. With the Panthers’ season and a trip to state hanging in the balance, the decisive contribution came on defense.
That has been part of what has separated Snider all fall.
The Panthers have had production. They have had athletes. They have spent most of the season near the top of the statewide conversation. Saturday required something different. They had to absorb a push from a good Harrison team and finish.
Snider did not dominate all four quarters. It did not need to.
October is about surviving the moments when a game stops going according to plan. The Panthers survived two of them Saturday — Northrop provided the first test, Harrison provided the second.
Now Snider gets one more Saturday to prove how far this season can go.
The Panthers advance to the October 17 state finals at Grand Park with an unbeaten record and, after Jackson’s interception, one more piece of evidence that their defense can deliver when the margin disappears.
The play that sent Snider to state did not come from a long touchdown run or a deep ball. It came with Harrison trying to take the season away.
Jackson took the ball instead.
