The football season is five weeks in and we have learned a lot so far. First, let’s start by going over the week five highlights:

Scoreboard Watchin’

There were six teams to pour in seventy-plus points this past week, leading to another full slate of lopsided scores.

Lawrence North and Cascade were the highest-scoring teams of the week, as each squad claimed a 77-0 walloping of Arsenal Tech and Frankfort, respectively, good for the largest margins of victory this week as well.

Lawrence North quarterback Darian Prather threw for four touchdowns — finding Monshun Sales and Desmond Bakersville twice each for scores — as Izayveon Moore took all three of his rushing attempts in for scores, as he racked up 103 yards on the day. Defensively, the Wildcats racked up 21 tackles for loss, two blocked punts and a punt return touchdown.

Cascade quarterback Brady Trebley tossed two scores of his own as the Cadets piled on 363 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground against Frankfort. Toby Savini achieved a hat trick for the Cadets: scoring on the ground, through the air and scooping up a fumble recovery on defense.

Hagerstown was next in line with a 76-12 win over Cambridge City. The Tigers racked up 463 yards and 11 scores on the ground, led by four touchdowns from Lincoln Small.

For a second straight week, Northview is shining bright with some high scores. This time, with its 70-0 triumph over Owen Valley. This makes it 154-0 in the past two weeks for the Knights.

Quarterback Colton Bath shone bright —  going 10-for-11 with 240 yards and three touchdowns — while receiver Avery Perry hauled in five receptions for 170 yards and a score. The Knights also got a pick-six and two punt return touchdowns to round out their scoring for the night.

Decatur Central finds itself clicking on offense as well, pouring on 73 points in a 46-point win against Mooresville.

The Hawks have racked up 148 points in the last two weeks as quarterback Bo Polston returned to the lineup last week. Despite the return, the Hawks leaned on their strong run game, accumulating 356 yards and six scores on the ground.

Lastly, Eastbrook poured on a 70-6 rout of Blackford.

Will anyone dethrone Brownsburg in 6A?

It was no secret Brownsburg would remain atop the state rankings after taking home the 6A title last season, especially considering the amount of talent and production it brought back this season.

However, not sure how many folks thought the Bulldogs would remain this dominant.

Reaching their 10th win in a row dating back to last season, the Bulldogs are winning games in a much more dominant fashion than they displayed last year. In their five-game win streak to end the season last year, they were winning by an average margin of 4.2 points per game.

This season? A whopping average margin of victory of 21.2 points. Including a 29-point shutout win vs. Cathedral, 28-point wins vs. Franklin Central and Fishers and a 13-point season-opening win vs. Archbishop Spalding (MD).

A big reason for the improved success is that Quarterback Oscar Frye has taken the leap and then some after an up-and-down season that saw him split reps with Iosua Stephens. The junior quarterback holds multiple offers, namely Louisville and Miami (OH),  is averaging over 200 yards per game and has thrown just one interception to his 15 touchdowns on the year.

The Contenders:

Carmel (4-1)

After a lackluster last couple of seasons, the Greyhounds are back in business under the guidance of Kevin Wright.

With its lone win coming out of state to Trinity (KY), Carmel’s record remains unblemished against in-state competition with a 49-point win vs. Columbus North, a 25-point win vs. Fishers and a 24-point win vs. Westfield.

Greyhound quarterback Anthony Coellner is playing confidently with his dual-threat abilities, completing nearly 77% of his passes to pair with 11 touchdowns and an additional five scores on the ground.

Center Grove (5-0)

Going 8-5 last season, the Trojans suffered more losses last year than the previous four combined. However, after the short hiatus from utter dominance, Center Grove is back to its winning ways with a 5-0 start.

The Trojans have leaned on a heavier rushing attack than in years past, with Nolan Rees, Ricky Lange and Hudson Winkler each accumulating over 300 yards and five touchdowns on the ground to start the season.

Crown Point (5-0)

Suffering just one loss in each of the last three seasons, the Bulldogs are still looking to take home a 6A title after a semi-state loss last season, a runner-up finish in 2023 and a failing to get out sectionals in 2022.

Crown Point boasts one of the best defenses in the state, giving up just seven points per outing while the offense is pouring in over 36 points per game. A well-balanced team, the Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them yet again in a top-loaded 6A class.
