If there’s a young athlete making waves in Class A basketball, Marquette Catholic’s Marissa Pleasant is a prime example. The 5-foot-7 sophomore from Michigan City, Indiana, has been a key contributor to the Lady Trailblazers, helping them reach their third state finals appearance in five years. Pleasant’s journey into sports began in childhood, but her love for basketball truly blossomed in fifth grade, thanks to supportive coaches and teammates who nurtured her talent.
“Growing up, I was involved in a lot of sports. My parents encouraged me to try everything, and I did. It wasn’t until fifth grade when I began to fall in love with basketball,” Pleasant shared with Justin Hartsough of Indiana Preps. “Being in that atmosphere created opportunity and success. I get a high from the game—that unpredictable nature, constant movement, and noise—it’s exhilarating. All of this has built my love for basketball.”
Thriving as a Multi-Sport Athlete
In addition to basketball, Pleasant participates in five sports at Marquette Catholic, a challenge she embraces despite the rigorous demands.
“Being a multi-sport athlete is harder than people might imagine. Some days, I barely get sleep, and I can’t catch a break. If I’m not shooting, I’m running; if I’m not running, I’m lifting,” Pleasant said. “But I wouldn’t want it any other way. I stay in shape because I’m always moving. Little victories keep me motivated when I’m tired. Discipline and work ethic keep me at my best.”
Making an Impact on the Court
This season, Pleasant has averaged 8.1 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Her standout performance came against East Chicago Central on December 14th, where she knocked down four three-pointers, leading the Lady Trailblazers to a commanding 64-21 victory.
Marquette Catholic currently holds an 11-2 record, and Pleasant attributes much of her growth to Coach Katie Collignon.
“As a starting guard, I feel that Coach Collignon has the largest impact on me. She continues to start me, which builds my confidence. Her coaching brings out the best in me, and I am determined to make her proud,” Pleasant said.
Looking ahead to the postseason, Pleasant is laser-focused on helping her team return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse and claim their third state championship.
“I think we have really good odds. Even though our record is strong, it means nothing in the postseason. This is when the team needs to come together and lift each other up to make that journey back to Indianapolis,” she said.
A Bright Future Ahead
Though Pleasant hasn’t received college offers yet, she’s optimistic about her future and is keeping her options open.
“I haven’t gone on any college visits yet, but that’s okay! I’m still a sophomore with two years ahead of me. If a coach invites me to visit, I’ll be forever grateful, but I’m not in a rush. When colleges come to me, I’ll be ready!” Pleasant exclaimed.
Goals Beyond the Court
Beyond basketball, Pleasant is aiming for success in the Oratorical Contest, where she hopes to showcase her knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and improve upon last year’s performance.
“My biggest goal as of now is to cut down four more nets. Basketball is a huge part of my life, and to reach this goal, I have to commit and contribute fully,” she said. “I’ve also entered the Oratorical Contest, and I’m hoping to make it past Zone this year.”
Next Up for the Lady Trailblazers
After finishing as runners-up in the Brebeuf Jesuit Classic, Marquette Catholic looks to bounce back on January 8th when they face Hammond Central. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Michigan City.
With Pleasant’s determination and leadership, the Lady Trailblazers have their sights set on a deep postseason run—and perhaps, another state championship banner.
