Brownsburg Edges Westfield in Thrilling 6A Title Game
Capping off a day of blowout victories in the 2A and 4A finals, the 6A showdown between HCC rivals Brownsburg and Westfield delivered an unforgettable battle.
Early Action and Controversy
After an exchange of punts in front of a packed lower bowl at Lucas Oil Stadium, junior ATH Deacon King broke the stalemate with a five-yard rushing touchdown. The score, however, was not without controversy, as instant replay appeared to show King nearly losing possession of the ball before crossing the goal line.
Westfield extended its lead to 10-0 in the second quarter, aided by strong runs from senior quarterback Carsen Melvin and a 27-yard catch by senior Parker Knott, setting up a 45-yard field goal by Owen Wright.
Frye Sparks Brownsburg’s Comeback
Facing a critical third-and-long before halftime, sophomore quarterback Oscar Frye hit junior running back Kovon Sumpter-Bey on a short screen. Sumpter-Bey sprinted down the field, cutting Westfield’s lead to 10-7.
Coming out of halftime, Frye connected with junior receiver Avin Robinson for a 65-yard gain, setting up a game-tying field goal by junior kicker Will Orlando.
“I know when I have playmakers like [Robinson] and the rest of the receivers, it makes my job easy,” Frye said. “I know they are going to win their one-on-one matchups, so it’s on me to get the ball to them.”
Frye finished the day with an efficient 7-of-9 passing for 161 yards and a touchdown.
Stephens Shines in the Fourth Quarter
Senior quarterback Iosua Stephens stepped up in the fourth quarter to seal the win for Brownsburg. To complement his 45 rushing yards, Stephens threw a go-ahead touchdown to sophomore receiver Branden Sharpe, giving the Bulldogs a 16-10 lead.
“If I’m a service academy school — or something like that — I’m gobbling [Stephens] up,” head coach John Hart said. “He [has] a 4.0 GPA, won the Mental Attitude award, and is a great football player.”
The two-quarterback system proved a unique advantage for Brownsburg throughout the season, with Frye and Stephens sharing a close bond on and off the field.
“I love Iosua, he’s one of my best friends,” Frye said. “The bond that we’ve had growing over the years and our friendship is something I’ll cherish forever. Having him being able to come in the game and make plays has been big for me, and he’s really been able to pick me up when I’m down.”
Pendleton’s Game-Changing Play
The Bulldogs gained critical momentum when senior linebacker Jamere Pendleton blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown, extending Brownsburg’s lead to 22-10.
“It was just amazing,” Hart said. “Jamere had five turnovers in three games by himself. When that happened, I thought we had the chance to really flip the game, because I thought defensively we were set.”
Westfield responded with a quick drive, capped by a nine-yard touchdown run from King to make it 22-17 with seven minutes remaining.
Late Drama
Brownsburg attempted to ice the game with a power-run package featuring a direct snap to senior lineman Mason Keifer. However, the snap was mishandled, giving Westfield a chance for a final drive with no timeouts remaining.
Melvin led the Shamrocks down the field with completions to Knott and King, aided by a facemask penalty, moving the ball to the Brownsburg 31-yard line. With just seven seconds left, Melvin’s desperation heave into the end zone was intercepted by junior defensive back Drew Bostic, sealing Brownsburg’s dramatic 22-17 victory.
A Season to Remember
“For the community, the coaches, my teammates, and the seniors especially, this is something special,” Frye said. “We had a special thing going all season, and putting an exclamation point on the end is something I’ll never forget.”
With the win, Brownsburg captured the 6A state title, capping an extraordinary season filled with resilience, teamwork, and unforgettable moments.
