Indiana Preps | On The Line — Softball State Finals Preview

Bittinger Stadium at Purdue University hosts the 41st IHSAA Softball State Finals today and tomorrow — four games, four classifications, four programs chasing a championship. Two of them are chasing history.

Here’s everything you need to know before first pitch.

TODAY — FRIDAY, JUNE 12 — WEST LAFAYETTE

CLASS 3A | 5:30 PM No. 10 Hanover Central (25-6) vs. New Palestine (24-7)

Hanover Central is back at Bittinger Stadium with unfinished business. The Wildcats lost to Cathedral 5-4 in last year’s state final — one run, one game, separating them from a championship they had worked an entire season to reach. They responded by winning 25 games, returning to West Lafayette with the same goal and a year’s worth of motivation behind it. Hanover is looking for its first state softball championship since 2004.

New Palestine arrives hunting something bigger than a title. The Dragons are chasing their record-tying seventh state softball championship — a number that would place them alongside the most decorated programs in Indiana softball history. New Palestine has been here before. They know what it costs to win in this setting and what it costs to come up short.

Stat to watch: New Palestine’s ability to manufacture runs in close games has defined their season. If this game stays tight into the late innings — and Hanover’s pitching gives them every reason to believe it will — execution in the small moments decides it.

CLASS 4A | 8:00 PM Terre Haute North Vigo (30-1) vs. No. 1 Lake Central (30-2)

This is the game of the weekend.

Lake Central is the No. 1-ranked program in Indiana, has gone 30-2, and has hit 71 home runs as a team this season. Seventy-one. That number redefines what a high school softball offense looks like. The Indians don’t just score runs — they change the shape of an inning with one swing. Lake Central is chasing its first state title since 2004.

Terre Haute North Vigo enters as the most dangerous one-loss team in the state. The Patriots are 30-1 and riding a 26-game winning streak — 17 of those victories came via the 10-run rule. A team that has ended games early that many times isn’t just winning. They’re dominating. Their lone loss is a footnote to a season of near-total dominance.

The matchup is the most compelling of the four finals: Indiana’s most prolific home run offense against a program that has been ending games before the seventh inning for most of two months. One team has to blink.

Stat to watch: Lake Central’s home run total. Seventy-one home runs in a high school season changes how opposing pitchers approach every at-bat. If North Vigo can neutralize Lake Central’s power they have the experience and momentum to win. If the Indians’ bats show up the way they have all season, it could be a short night for the Patriots.

TOMORROW — SATURDAY, JUNE 13 — WEST LAFAYETTE

CLASS 1A | 4:30 PM South Central (22-8) vs. Barr-Reeve (29-2)

Barr-Reeve enters Saturday as one of Indiana’s most consistent small-school programs — built for June. The Vikings come in at 29-2 and their two losses have done nothing to slow a program that has been building toward this weekend all season. South Central at 22-8 earned their spot at Bittinger the hard way. This is their stage now.

Stat to watch: Barr-Reeve’s pitching depth late in games. Small-school state finals are won by programs that execute under pressure, and Barr-Reeve has the track record to do exactly that.

CLASS 2A | 7:00 PM Western Boone (22-7) vs. Tecumseh (28-4)

Save this one for last. Tecumseh is making its 13th state championship game appearance — a state record in itself. The Braves won their fifth consecutive semistate title last weekend — resetting their own state record for most consecutive semistates — and their ninth semistate overall. A Tecumseh victory Saturday would deliver their seventh state championship, tying the state record currently held by Center Grove.

Western Boone earned their first-ever semistate championship to get here, defeating Andrean 8-6 in the championship game. This is new territory for the Stars. It is deeply familiar ground for Tecumseh. That experience gap is real — and Western Boone gets to prove what first-timers can do when the stage is the biggest it has ever been.

Stat to watch: Tecumseh’s run differential. Their semistate performances of 12-0 and 14-0 reflect a program that doesn’t just win — it controls. Western Boone will need to make this a battle from the first pitch to change the outcome.
