As Reese Rhodehamel approaches her final season at Bishop Luers, the senior guard reflects on a high school career filled with memorable moments and personal growth, culminating in her commitment to play college basketball at John Carroll University. From leading her team to a state title run to embracing the challenges of evolving as a player, Rhodehamel’s journey is a testament to her resilience and drive.
High School Highlights: Growth and Memorable Moments
One of Reese’s most cherished memories from her time at Bishop Luers was the experience of last season’s state run and title victory. However, another game that stands out for her was a matchup against Columbia City, where she hit a career high in points.
“I remember after I hit my career high in points during that game, my teammates were all so happy and supportive,” Rhodehamel recalls. “It was just a really great feeling, and I felt proud and honored to be able to play with those girls.”
Reflecting on her growth as a player, Rhodehamel notes that her game has evolved significantly since her freshman year. Initially, she was known primarily for her shooting, but once teams caught on, she realized the need to develop other aspects of her game, particularly on the defensive end.
“As I focused more on defense, it took pressure off of my offensive game,” she says. “I became a more consistent shooter this year than in my sophomore year when I went through a bit of a slump.”
Influences and Lessons Learned
Rhodehamel credits several coaches for playing pivotal roles in her development. Former head coach Mark Pixley and current head coach Mary Hathaway have devoted considerable time and energy into helping her refine her skills. Additionally, her AAU coach, Greg Friend, has been a consistent supporter, helping set up opportunities for Rhodehamel to reach her full potential.
Beyond the technical aspects of the game, Rhodehamel has learned valuable lessons, particularly the importance of mental resilience. She struggled with the mental side of basketball during her sophomore year when she hit a shooting slump, but through perseverance, she developed a “next play” mentality that now keeps her focused on continuous improvement.
“The most important lesson I’ve learned is the mindset I’ve established for myself,” she explains. “It reminds me to keep my head up if I make a mistake and focus on the next play.”
The Decision to Commit to John Carroll University
Reese’s commitment to John Carroll University came as a surprise, even to her. Initially hesitant because of the distance, she quickly fell in love with the school during her visit. The coaches, academic offerings, and welcoming team made it clear that JCU was the right fit.
“The sealing factor was the team,” Rhodehamel shares. “They were all so welcoming and kind both on and off the court. It was a win-win situation I couldn’t pass up.”
At 5’10″, Rhodehamel believes her versatility as a guard will fit well with John Carroll’s style of play. She’s eager to contribute to their free-flowing offense, and she’s excited to join a program that fosters positivity and community.
Looking Ahead to College and Beyond
While excited about her future at John Carroll, Rhodehamel remains focused on her senior season at Bishop Luers. She is committed to leading her team both on and off the court and is working on her defensive skills and finishing around the rim.
When asked about her advice to younger players, Reese emphasizes the importance of mindset. “Establish a good mindset early on instead of letting your game go downhill while you try to figure that aspect out,” she advises. “Do everything with a purpose—practice, games, and even outside of the gym. You practice how you will play, and every aspect of what you do goes into that.”
Looking ahead, Rhodehamel aspires to pursue a teaching degree in elementary education while continuing her basketball career. She also hopes to start coaching young girls, passing on the lessons and experiences that shaped her own journey.
Gratitude and Legacy
As her time at Bishop Luers comes to a close, Rhodehamel is deeply thankful to her family, coaches, and teammates for their unwavering support. She holds a special place in her heart for her state title team, describing them as family.
“We created such an amazing bond that I truly don’t think anyone could break. I consider each of them to be a sister,” she says. “I want to thank all of my teammates from freshman year to now for helping shape the player and person I’ve become.”
For Rhodehamel, representing Bishop Luers means carrying forward the leadership qualities, faith, and winning culture of a program with seven state titles. As she prepares for the next chapter at John Carroll University, she does so with the confidence, strength, and lessons gained from her time at Bishop Luers.
