The 2021 Class 2A Championship Game brings us the Parke Heritage Wolves (27-3) (Ranked # 5 in the final 2A AP Poll) and the Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian Braves (27-3) (Ranked # 1 in the final 2A AP Poll, #5 in the final IBCA Poll).
Parke Heritage, making its first appearance in the State Finals, is anchored by a very good defense, having limited opponents to a shade over 42 points per game on the season. The Wolves are led by 6’4” Senior Forward Connor Davis (nearly 15 PPG, along with 8 RPG).
The leading scorer for the Wolves, 6’0” Sophomore Guard Christian Johnson (16+ PPG, and an impressive nearly 7 RPG from a Guard), along with fellow Guard Riley Ferguson (6’2” Senior, 12+ PPG, 4 RPG), serve as the leaders for the Wolves’ backcourt.
The powerhouse Braves have rolled throughout the season, averaging a State-leading 82.7 PPG. The Braves are, of course, centered around future Indiana All-Star, and possible Indiana Mr. Basketball (and future Purdue Boilermaker) Caleb Furst (6’10” Senior Center averaging 21+ PPG and 14+ RPG).
The Braves have plenty of firepower elsewhere, though, in the form of Zane Burke (6’3” Senior Forward averaging nearly 18 PPG, 6+ APG, and nearly 6 RPG). A third double-digit per game scorer is 6’0” Senior Guard Marcus Davidson (nearly 13 PPG). 6’1” Senior Guard Callan Wood provides the Braves with just shy of 10 PPG.
The Wolves have been rugged on defense in its run through the Southern half of 2A, allowing an average of just over 33 points per game in the State Tournament. The Braves have steamrolled through the Northern half of 2A, averaging north of 80 points per game in the State Tournament.
On paper, this seems like a definite contrast of styles, each of which has earned these teams the right to compete for the 2A Championship. Which team will emerge as this year’s Class 2A Champion?
