Evansville, Indiana: This has truly been a season unlike any other that we have experienced. That being said, we have reached Week 9 and the conclusion of the regular season. Throughout the state, programs have their final opportunity to generate/maintain momentum headed into the State Tournament, which begins next week as the Sectional gets underway. This week also serves as a time for the renewal of rivalries throughout the state.
A prime example of ‘Rivalry Week’ is set to be played at the Bear Den (Central Stadium), as the Evansville North Huskies (5-3) travel to Evansville Central to take on the Bears. Evansville Central (8-0, 4A # 3 – Coaches, # 2 – AP) has already clinched an outright SIAC Championship, and is coming off a 14-3 win at Castle. The Huskies, after a 5-0 start, have dropped three straight games, and are looking to regain their footing heading into Sectional 15 play.
Central’s combination of speed, power, and experience has led its primarily ground-based offense to average nearly 300 rushing yards per game. The Bears also feature a stifling defense; one that has allowed 57 points in eight games.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Huskies are led by Senior Tailback Capoleton Presswood, who comes into the game having rushed for nearly 1,200 yards on the season (nearly 9 yards per carry, along with 15 rushing touchdowns), and Soph. Athlete Jaylonn Mitchell. North also has an experienced QB in Jr. Ethan Brawdy. Sr. DL Gage Sales (50 tackles on the season) anchors the North defense.
The State Tournament awaits following this week. Will the Bears complete an unbeaten regular season ahead of entering Sectional 24 play? Will the Huskies play the role of spoiler and create momentum heading into Sectional 15 play?
This rivalry contest promises to be a heated game that will definitely prepare each team for postseason play. I cannot wait to see how this one will play out.
