Indianapolis Ben Davis, the number 1 team in our power 25 rankings faced off against a tough opponent in number 4 Avon on last Friday. The Giants were able to hold off the Orioles and their quarterback Brandon Peters, winning 49-42. While Ben Davis star Chris Evans was held in check for most of the game, junior quarterback Azjai Cooper kept the Giants alive and managed to have a stellar performance overshadowed by his counterpart in Peters.
Cooper, a first year starter for the defending 6A state champion Giants, is 6’4 195 with a strong arm and great athleticism. He can extend the pocket to throw, but is very capable to take off and gash the defense with his running ability. It was on this night, Cooper showcased his talents while most paid attention to fellow Michigan Wolverine recruits in teammate Evans and Avon’s Peters.
Azjai Cooper rallied his Giants completing 11 of his 17 passes, gaining 255 yards and throwing 4 touchdowns. The young quarterback did not turn over the ball in such a high pressure game. In fact, it was Peter’s with a costly turnover late in the game. Cooper proved he’s ready to take center stage on this Ben Davis offense and give college coaches notice, that he too, is a prospect.
