Indiana Preps | On The Line — IHSAA Boys Soccer Postseason

The final boys soccer poll did more than put a number next to Castle.

It widened the state-title conversation.

The Indiana Soccer Coaches Association’s final rankings put Castle at No. 1 in Class 3A, followed by Bloomington South at No. 2 and Fishers at No. 3. Goshen, Evansville North, Fort Wayne Carroll and Evansville Memorial all sit inside the top seven.

That matters as sectionals begin Tuesday.

For much of the final stretch of the regular season, the 3A conversation leaned toward central Indiana and the loaded Carmel sectional. That part of the bracket still matters — North Central, Carmel, Westfield, Noblesville and Zionsville are all packed into Sectional 9.

But the final poll is a reminder that the title board is much broader than one Indianapolis-area bracket.

Southern Indiana enters October with real weight.

Castle is No. 1. Evansville North is No. 5. Evansville Memorial is No. 7. Jasper is also inside the top 10. Bloomington South sits at No. 2. That gives the southern half of the state five teams with legitimate top-end résumés before the first postseason whistle.

Castle is at the center of that.

The Knights finished the regular season 13-2-1 and have spent most of the fall playing like a team capable of carrying the No. 1 label. They have enough attacking depth to create pressure without relying on one player and enough defensive structure to keep matches from opening up unnecessarily.

That balance is what becomes valuable now. October soccer usually gets tighter. Possessions get more important. Set pieces matter more. One mistake can erase two months of good work.

Castle enters the postseason with the ranking, but not with a clear runway.

Evansville North is 13-2-1 and has built one of the stronger overall résumés in the state. Evansville Memorial has played a difficult schedule and remains one of the most dangerous teams in the southern part of the bracket. Jasper has stayed in the conversation as well.

Then there is Bloomington South.

The Panthers enter the postseason 11-1-3 and sit No. 2 in the final coaches poll. MaxPreps also had Bloomington South near the very top of its statewide computer rankings entering sectionals, reinforcing how strong the Panthers’ body of work has been.

Fishers remains another obvious part of the championship conversation. The Tigers finished the regular season 12-1-2 and sit No. 3 in the final 3A poll. Their path runs through Hamilton Southeastern Sectional 8 — a different challenge from the Carmel field, but still one that leaves little room for a slow night.

And then there is Goshen.

The RedHawks sit No. 4 in the final 3A poll after a strong fall and enter an Elkhart sectional that includes Concord, Northridge, Penn, Mishawaka and Elkhart. The path is not easy, but Goshen has done enough this season to belong in the statewide conversation rather than being treated as a regional curiosity.

That is really the larger point of the final poll.

There is no single corridor controlling this tournament. The Indianapolis area has depth. Southern Indiana has high-end contenders. Northern Indiana has Goshen and Carroll. Bloomington South sits between those conversations and has looked like one of the most complete teams in the state.

The same statewide balance shows up in the smaller classes. Guerin Catholic enters the Class 2A tournament ranked No. 1, ahead of Mishawaka Marian and Bishop Noll. In Class 1A, Blackhawk Christian holds the top spot and enters sectionals unbeaten at 13-0-2.

The IHSAA boys soccer tournament begins October 6, with sectional rounds continuing October 7, 8 and 10. Regionals follow October 15 and 17, semi-states on October 24, and the state finals October 30-31.

The final rankings give Castle the top line. They do not give the Knights control of the bracket.

That is the difference now.

The regular season told us who built the best résumé. October decides who can survive the deepest field.
