Games To Watch: The Mid-State Conference Race Has a Three-Way Tie. Friday Night in Bloomington Is Where It Starts to Break.

The Mid-State Conference entered 2026 with a new member and immediately created the most interesting three-way conference race in central Indiana. Friday night’s matchup between Plainfield and Bloomington North — the Cougars’ first season in the Mid-State after leaving Conference Indiana — is the opening chapter of a head-to-head sequence that will sort out the conference title conversation before October ends.

Plainfield travels to Bloomington. Kickoff is 7:00 PM.

The Setup

Bloomington North made the jump to the Mid-State Conference in 2026 after years in Conference Indiana. The Cougars arrived with a program capable of competing at the top of the standings from Day 1 under first-year head coach Andy Harding — and three weeks in, the results have backed that up.

All three programs — Plainfield, Bloomington North, and Decatur Central — are 3-1 overall. Each absorbed a lopsided Week 1 loss before finding their footing and winning three straight. The three-way tie at the top of the Mid-State is real and it starts breaking Friday night.

Plainfield’s Path Here

The Quakers opened the year with a loss to Franklin Central — a 6A program with genuine state championship ambitions — before responding with three straight wins: 46-21 over Harrison in Week 2, 27-14 over Mooresville in Week 3, and a dominant 53-14 win at Perry Meridian in Week 4. The week-over-week improvement has been the defining characteristic of this Plainfield team. A program that put 53 points on a conference opponent in Week 4 looks significantly different than the one that dropped its opener.

Bloomington North’s Path Here

The Cougars opened with a 6-44 loss to Bloomington South — the same Bloomington South program ranked in the Indiana Preps Power 25 at No. 10 and currently 4-0. That Week 1 opponent context matters. Bloomington North wasn’t beaten by a soft program in its opener — they were beaten by one of the better teams in the state.

What followed was a three-game winning streak that established exactly who this program is. A 41-40 win at Bedford North Lawrence in Week 2 was one of the wilder finishes of the entire opening month statewide — a one-point escape that required every possession and showed the Cougars can win ugly when ugly is required. Then 46-20 over Martinsville in Week 3. Then 37-18 at Mooresville in Week 4. Three consecutive wins, all against conference opponents, all decided by comfortable margins after the Bedford North Lawrence scare.

Andy Harding is 3-1 in his first year at Bloomington North. The program is exactly what the Mid-State Conference expected when the realignment was announced.

Decatur Central Watching From Home

Decatur Central beat Martinsville 37-0 in Week 4 — their second consecutive shutout after the 35-0 win over Whiteland in Week 3. The Hawks have built a defensive identity that makes them genuinely difficult to score on. Hunter Harvey has been the offensive catalyst, and sophomore quarterback Ezekiel Hester continues to develop into the leadership role this program needs him in.

Decatur Central’s head-to-head matchups come in sequence. The Hawks host Mooresville on September 18 while Friday’s game is being played, then travel to Plainfield on September 25. Their date with Bloomington North comes on October 2 — meaning the full three-way head-to-head sequence runs through early October before a conference winner can be identified.

The Upcoming Head-to-Head Matchups:

  • September 18: Plainfield AT Bloomington North — 7:00 PM
  • September 25: Decatur Central AT Plainfield — 7:00 PM
  • October 2: Bloomington North AT Decatur Central — 7:00 PM

Three games. Three weeks. The three-way tie becomes a pecking order by the second week of October.

Why Friday Matters

Bloomington North has home field. They have momentum from three straight wins. They have a Week 1 loss to a ranked team that provides context rather than concern. And they have a conference that is watching closely to see if the newest member can establish itself at the top of the standings.

Plainfield has the better recent margin. A 53-14 win is a statement regardless of the opponent. The Quakers are playing with the confidence of a team that has answered every question posed to it after the Week 1 loss.

Something has to give Friday night in Bloomington. The Mid-State Conference race has been building toward this week since the schedule was released.
