The Utterback name has meant something in Indiana volleyball for years. Plainfield. Circle City VBC. Three sisters. One standard.
Now the youngest of them has her home. Audrey Utterback, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter in the Class of 2028, has committed to UCLA — and the story behind how it happened is one of the best in Indiana’s recruiting calendar this summer.
It started with a family trip.
“I was lucky enough to attend my sister’s official visit when she transferred from Louisville in May,” Audrey said. “Literally as soon as I met the coaches and saw the environment, I knew I was home. I even told my parents and sister on that trip that I am coming here if they offer.”
Her sister Olivia made her decision. And on June 15, the UCLA staff made theirs — extending an offer to Audrey during her own recruiting process. Two sisters. One campus. One decision that clicked before anyone even asked for a commitment.
“It was an emotional but so exciting time for me and for my family,” she said.
The family thread running through this commitment makes it one of the more compelling volleyball stories Indiana has produced in the 2028 class. Ava Utterback, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Plainfield, played in the Class of 2024 — the oldest sister who helped establish the family’s name in the Indiana volleyball community. Olivia followed and earned her way to a Power Four program. Now Audrey is taking that trajectory all the way to Westwood.
The player UCLA is getting is built for the modern game. Audrey describes herself as a high-achieving six-rotation outside hitter — a primary attacker, consistent serve-receive passer, back-row defender, and offensive option in transition who takes pride in her all-around game. Prep Dig named her among Indiana’s 15 Open All-Americans — a recognition that reflects what Circle City VBC and Plainfield have been developing quietly for two years.
Bruin fans won’t have to wonder what’s coming.
“Someone who loves to win, is gritty, and will play hard every second of the game,” Audrey said. “Over the next two years before I get there, I plan to continue to work on my game, weightlifting, and training to be the best player I can be for the school and coaches.”
Two years of high school left. A UCLA commitment locked in. And a family legacy in Indiana volleyball that just got its most significant chapter yet.
