Caitlin Clark didn’t play Wednesday night. Indiana won anyway.
The Fever handled Portland 90-73 without their franchise player, who was ruled out less than two hours before tip with a back issue after missing Tuesday’s practice. It was her first missed game of the 2026 season, and yes — given what happened in 2025, when Clark missed 13 consecutive games with soft tissue injuries, any scratch is going to trigger alarm bells across Indiana. That’s earned. The fanbase has been here before.
But Coach Stephanie White wasn’t hitting the panic button. “She’s healthy, we’re not managing anything,” White said after the win, adding that Clark is expected to be available Friday against Golden State at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Take that for what it’s worth and keep an eye on it.
Here’s the part worth sitting with though — Aliyah Boston had 24 points and 8 rebounds while Lexie Hull and Kelsey Mitchell stepped up, 16 and 21 points respectfully. The Fever showed they can compete and win without the most watched player in women’s basketball on the floor. That’s a different team than the one Indiana watched struggle through injuries two years ago. That’s depth. That’s development. That’s a program that has grown into something more than one player’s highlight reel.
Clark is still averaging 24.3 points and a league-best 9.0 assists through four games. She is appointment television for this city. Friday night against Golden State at Gainbridge should be a full building — and if she’s out there healthy, it will be.
But if Wednesday night proved anything, it’s that this Fever team is built to withstand a night off from their star. In Indiana, that should feel like progress.
Clark’s status Friday is must-watch. The Fever’s identity without her — that’s the conversation worth having.
