History was made Saturday night at Grand Park as the Penn Kingsmen captured the first-ever Indiana High School Girls Flag Football State Championship, defeating Lawrence North 35–12. Among the stars of the night was junior standout Alivia Dawson, whose all-around performance led the way in the Kingsmen’s dominant win.

Dawson’s stat line told the story of a true two-way playmaker:

  • 4 interceptions on defense
  • 72 receiving yards and 1 touchdown
  • 1-for-1 passing for 15 yards

But beyond the numbers, it was her leadership, composure, and energy that set the tone for Penn’s undefeated (13-0) championship run.

“Chemistry and Hard Work” — The Foundation of a Champion

When reflecting on what fueled the Kingsmen’s perfect season, Dawson emphasized the importance of team unity.

“Definitely our chemistry and overall hard work as a team,” Dawson said. “Every day, every person gave it their all and was extremely coachable. We paid attention to all the little details and actively tried to improve each and every day.”

That mindset showed on the field. Under head coach Jerimiah Maggart, Penn averaged 42 points per game while allowing just 4 points per contest, dominating opponents through precision and effort.

A Dream Realized — and a Legacy Started

Girls flag football is still an emerging sport in Indiana, but Dawson understands the significance of what she and her teammates have accomplished.

“It is truly a blessing, not only to be part of history but to be able to live out a dream I’ve had since I was a kid,” she shared. “I’m honestly just so grateful and I hope I can set a good example for any younger girls looking up to us hoping to play one day too.”

Penn’s championship represents more than just a title — it’s a milestone for the sport’s growth across the state.

Unbreakable Bonds and Championship Moments

The Kingsmen’s rise wasn’t just built on talent — it was built on trust.

“It’s been everything, honestly,” Dawson said. “Some of these girls have become my closest friends, and I know I’ve made memories that will last a lifetime.”

In the title game, Dawson’s four interceptions shifted momentum at critical moments. When asked about performing under pressure, she credited her preparation and mindset.

“I visualize the game beforehand, listen to music, and try to relax,” she explained. “Once I step on the field, I just have confidence in myself and do my job. After the first interception, I told myself to keep it up — I fed off my team’s energy and stayed composed.”

What’s Next for Alivia Dawson

Despite the championship still fresh in her mind, Dawson is already focused on what’s ahead.

“I actually have basketball tryouts tonight,” she laughed. “It’s about putting in as much work as I can. Hopefully next year we can make it to state again. Until then, it’s about growth and getting better.”
