It was far from perfect, and sometimes outright ugly. Yet, with zeroes on the clock, Brownsburg found a way to stay undefeated — which might just be the most daunting aspect of the reigning 6A champs.
“To be able to come out with the win, first and foremost, is the most important thing,” quarterback Oscar Frye said.
The Bulldogs were quickly stifled with a punt on their first drive of the game before blocking Westfield’s ensuing punt attempt, setting up Avin Robinson for an easy 20-yard touchdown to get the scoring started en route to a 14-10 triumph over the Shamrocks.
After continuously coming up short in the red zone, Westfield was able to capitalize midway through the second quarter on a 64-yard seam route to tight end Owen Watts as he just barely outran pursuing defenders to take a 10-7 Shamrock lead into halftime.
“They are so good at what they do,” Frye said. “We got some stuff (in the red zone) that we’ll need to clean up, and we’ll learn from it to be better for next week and the rest of the season.”
Midway through the third quarter, Frye was finally able to pierce through the stiff Westfield red zone defense as he found Branden Sharpe right on the goal line to put the ‘Dogs back in the lead for what would be the final score of the game.
Come the final quarter of play, it was the hard running from Brady Lewis behind impressive play from the Brownsburg offensive line that helped seal the game for the Bulldogs. This included the go-ahead 4th-and-1 conversion by Lewis with just over a minute left in the game to seal the deal.
“It’s awesome to have games like these where you’re fighting and have these situations,” Frye said. “Being able to score when we did was definitely crucial…We obviously have stuff to clean up from tonight, but we’ll be ready for practice Monday and get ready to get after Zionsville next week.”
Brownsburg is now the winner of 11 in a row as they eye up consecutive title runs.
As for Westfield, the reigning 6A runner-ups will be on the road against Avon as they fall to 4-2 on the season after Friday night’s defeat.
