FORT WAYNE, Ind. – History was made Tuesday night as Carroll and Homestead met on the gridiron—not for football, but for volleyball. For the first time in Indiana high school sports history, a volleyball match was staged outdoors on a football field in what was dubbed the “Turf Takeover.”
Carroll wasted no time making the landmark event memorable, sweeping the Spartans in straight sets (25-18, 25-10, 25-6). The victory pushes the Chargers’ record to a perfect 8-0 on the season.
Dominant Performance
Behind the play of Bailey Sinish, who tallied 15 kills and 4 blocks, Carroll controlled the match from start to finish. Setter Sophia Gisslen orchestrated the offense with 27 assists and added 2 aces from the service line.
Defensively, libero Cala Haffner was relentless, digging up 14 balls and chipping in 3 aces. Sarah Stegall added 8 kills and an ace, while Addi Shippy made her presence felt at the net with 5 kills and 3 blocks. Lola Sasse anchored the Chargers’ block party, recording 4 blocks and 2 kills.
Carroll’s depth shined as well, with contributions across the roster:
Hayden Finefrock: 6 digs, 1 ace Elli Oskey: 2 kills, 3 digs Ella Craker: 3 aces
More Than a Match
While the Chargers’ victory was convincing, the evening itself was bigger than the scoreboard. Playing under the lights of the football stadium created a unique atmosphere, drawing fans, families, and community members to witness a groundbreaking moment in Indiana high school athletics.
“This was about creating an experience for our players and fans that they’ll never forget,” said Carroll’s coaching staff. “It’s not every day you get to make history.”
Looking Ahead
With their sweep of Homestead, Carroll continues to establish itself as one of the top teams in the state, blending power, precision, and teamwork. The Chargers now turn their attention to the next stretch of their schedule, but the “Turf Takeover” will remain a defining highlight of their season.
For Homestead, the match was a chance to take part in history and gain valuable experience against a talented rival.
