For someone who didn’t pick up football until his freshman year, Isaac Nelson has quickly become one of the most impactful defenders in Indiana.
Now a senior at Carmel, the 6’2, 185-pound safety/linebacker enters the 2025 season as one of the top returning defensive players in the Hoosier State – and a recent Wake Forest commit.

Blessed with elite track speed (10.51 in the 100 meters) and a physical, high-energy play style, Nelson gives the Greyhounds a true defensive tone-setter. Last fall he finished with 53 tackles, five pass breakups and an interception in just nine games. But for Nelson, Carmel’s 3–7 finish and first-round sectional loss to Zionsville wasn’t nearly good enough.

“This past season, I grew a lot as a leader and really found my confidence on the field,” Nelson told Indiana Preps. “Even though we didn’t finish the way we wanted, there’s a new energy in the locker room with Coach Wright taking over. At Carmel, the standard is a state championship, and that is exactly what we are chasing.”

Nelson credits his rapid development to relentless work, his strong support system and his faith.

“If you told my younger self where I’d be today, I wouldn’t be surprised — not because it was guaranteed, but because I’ve worked relentlessly to get here,” he said. “None of this would be possible without the support of my parents and the coaches who’ve poured into me. I’m grateful for how far I’ve come, but this is far from over. My faith in God keeps me focused, humble and working hard every day.”

The arrival of new head coach Kevin Wright, a proven state championship leader, has already brought a spark.

“This offseason has been about locking in on the details and building a real brotherhood,” Nelson said. “Last year, the connection in the locker room wasn’t where it needed to be. Now we’re intentional about knowing every guy — even the freshmen — by name. There’s a new level of energy and hunger. I’ve also grown a lot in my football IQ. I’m seeing the game clearer and reacting faster.”

Nelson has set the bar high for his senior campaign.

“My goals are to earn All-State honors and break the single-season interception record at Carmel,” he said. “I truly believe we have what it takes to win a state championship. With our returning core and some key transfers, we’re ready for the challenge.”

When his Carmel career ends, Nelson will head to the ACC, where he’ll suit up for Wake Forest as a linebacker.

“What really set Wake apart was the opportunity to be part of something special,” he said. “With the new coaching staff coming in, I saw a chance to help lay the foundation for a new era. I connected deeply with the entire staff and the academics are second to none. I believe Wake Forest is on the rise and I’m honored to be a part of that journey.”

If his rapid rise over the last three years is any indication, Nelson is just getting started — and 2025 could be his biggest leap yet.
