For Hamilton Southeastern junior Kayla Stidham, basketball is more than just a game; it’s a bond, a legacy, and a way to follow in the footsteps of her mother, Lisa Stidham, who was crowned Indiana Miss Basketball in 1997 at Richmond High School before a stellar career at Penn State. Inspired by her mother’s journey, Kayla is now forging her own path, determined to leave her mark on the court.

“What inspired me to play basketball was my mom,” Kayla shared with Indiana Preps. “She taught me everything, from dribbling to shooting. She’s been with me every step of the way, especially through the recruiting process, and I’m so thankful to have her support.”

Team Spirit and Unselfish Play

A versatile shooting guard and small forward, Kayla thrives in Hamilton Southeastern’s system, where teamwork is paramount. The Lady Royals, known as one of the most dynamic offensive teams in Indiana’s Class 4A, embody a culture of selflessness on the court, something Kayla deeply values.

“I love how much we play as a team,” Kayla said. “We’re always working to set each other up for success. It’s not about individual accolades; it’s about what we accomplish together.”

Kayla has been a key contributor to Hamilton Southeastern’s success, helping them secure a 22-4 record last season. As a sophomore, she averaged 12.9 points and 3.9 assists per game, proving herself as a reliable scorer, especially from beyond the arc, where she sank 31 three-pointers. This level of performance is the result of relentless dedication, spending countless hours in the gym, honing her skills and preparing for the big moments.

“My work ethic is something I’m really proud of,” Kayla said. “I’m always striving to get better, and my best friend KK Holman is right there with me, pushing me every day. She’s been such a huge support through practices, games, and even the challenges of recruiting. My teammates also play a massive role in my success. Everyone knows their role and is so committed; I wouldn’t have the opportunities I do without them.”

The Recruiting Trail

As Kayla’s junior season approaches, so does the excitement of her future in college basketball. With offers from Ball State, Cleveland State, Evansville, La Salle, and a recent offer from Robert Morris, she’s beginning to see the fruits of her hard work pay off. But beyond the offers, she’s found joy in connecting with coaches, meeting fellow players, and exploring what her basketball journey could look like beyond high school.

“It’s exciting to meet new coaches, visit new places, and see the possibilities ahead,” she said. “It’s motivating to keep working hard and keep reaching higher.”

Looking Ahead to a Promising Season

As the new season looms, Kayla and her teammates are focused on two goals: togetherness and toughness. It’s a theme that’s resonated over the past two years and one they believe could define this season as something truly special.

“The first thing that comes to mind for this season is togetherness and toughness,” Kayla shared. “It’s something we’ve talked about, and we know this could be a big year if we stay focused. I’m grateful for every one of my teammates and coaches, and we’re ready to give it everything.”
