Officially, the high school football season has been over for just under two months, but several Central Indiana players are proving the adage that football is a year round sport true.
Lutheran’s DeVaun Jones and Brebeuf’s Maverick Geske recently took part in the Pylon 7on7 Vegas event in Las Vegas.
“The Vegas experience was great, but it was a little cold and windy. I performed extremely well, and, as a team, we did too. We had to show them Indiana boys can ball too,” said Jones, who caught two passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns during the Class A state title game last November.
Geske said while the experience is different from a Friday night in the fall, it was enough to get his competitive juices flowing and help prepare him.
“Obviously, 7 on 7 is different, but just being able to continue getting reps, reading coverages and making throws all over the field against some of the best competition in the country will definitely improve my game,” Geske said.
Jones said he has been working hard at perfecting his route running and speed during the offseason, and admitted it felt good to be back on the football field again.
“It felt good to get back to competing again. I played well and playing against other states allows me to see what I will be going up against in college and see that I can play anywhere,” Jones said.
Jones said it is of the utmost importance to him to show the nation how good the talent is in Indiana at each 7on7 event.
“It is important to me because I can’t disappoint my city. I always have to show them that Indiana can do what other states are doing too,” he said.
Geske said Indiana’s team was full of prime time players.
“Our receivers were Eugene Hilton, Taylor Clark, DeVaughn Slaughter, DeVaun Jones, Jalen Bonds and some guys on our defense were Mason Alexander and Max Phenicle,” Geske said.
The Brebeuf signal caller said it was amazing to play with those guys.
“It’s great to have connections with those guys from all over and it really makes our intensity and energy in practice stay at a high level because of how good the competition is,” Geske said.
With his senior season approaching, Jones will look to lead Lutheran to another state title, this time in Class 2A as the Saints have moved up due to the success factor. In addition, he has a personal goal he would like to check off.
“My upcoming season goal is 2,000 yards,” Jones said.
For Geske, with the season on the horizon, he has his sights set on getting Brebeuf Jesuit back to Lucas Oil Stadium for a state championship appearance.
“Obviously, a state championship is a goal for every season, so to win Brebeuf’s first football state championship, win our conference and there are a few records I haven’t broken yet, so I would like to break every record in our school’s history,” Geske said.
