A moment many of us had waited upon for a year was soon to come as Westfield took on the #9 ranked team in the country by MaxPreps Center Grove in the 2021 6A State Championship. The biggest crowd of the weekend showed up for this game as most of the first level of seating in Lucas Oil was filled with either a sea of green or red.
Westfield went 3 and out on their first drive of the evening leading to a punt inside their own 30. Caden Curry converted on two-fourths and inches for Center Grove before Tennessee commit Tayven Jackson ran the ball into the end zone from just 1 yard out. The extra point was blocked leading to a 6-0 lead for the Trojans. Three drives later, Micah Hauser ran the ball 15 yards into the end zone to put the Shamrocks up by one following the extra point.
Center Grove was soon to be back on top once Caden Curry found the end zone for the Trojans from 1 yard out. Micah Hauser carried the ball 26 yards on the following drive for a Shamrock’s touchdown. Westfield was on top once again 14-13. Center Grove redeemed the breakdown on defense with a perfect 3-minute drive. The drive capped off with Tayven Jackson’s first passing touchdown of the night on a short curl route to Harrison Stomps who then broke off two tackles and ran 20 yards putting the Trojans back on top. Westfield attempted to get a few points before the half but a 36-yard field goal from Alex Rudolph was no good. Center Grove led the back and forth game at halftime 20-14.
Center Grove scored on their first possession to start the half with a 5-yard touchdown run from Micah Coyle. Westfield came up with a crucial answer on offense the following drive when Micah Hauser piled into the end zone at the goal line.
Center Grove came into the final quarter up 27-21. With 5 minutes to go in the 2021 season, Westfield started their final drive to attempt to take the lead. The Shamrocks put together a great possession, but it fell apart when Westfield’s Maximus Webster threw an interception to sophomore Owen Bright inside the 5 to seal the game for the Trojans. 28 straight wins for head coach Eric Moore as the Center Grove Trojans came out as the victors of the 6A conference for the second year in a row.
