Fort Branch, IN – The Lawrenceburg Tigers and Gibson Southern Titans took the stage in the 2021 Class 3A Regional, with the winner getting an opportunity to make the trip to play at Tri-West next week in the 3A South Semi-State.
Gibson Southern won the toss, and deferred their choice to the 2nd Half. Following the opening kickoff, Lawrenceburg got to near midfield before GS forced a punt. The Tigers were able to down the ball on the Titans’ 1-yard line. The Titans responded with a 99-yard drive, punctuated with a 28-yard strike from Brady Allen to Sean DeLong.
Lawrenceburg was able to respond, on the ensuing possession, with a 21-yard TD run by Sr. QB Garrett Yoon (6’0”, 175). Following the kickoff, GS was able to drive to inside the Tigers’ 40 before the Lawrenceburg defense was able to force a Titans punt.
The Titans’ defense was able to force a Lawrenceburg punt, and the GS offense set up at their own 44. Gibson Southern capped a 10-play drive with a 14-yard TD pass from Brady Allen to Brayden Malone.
The Titans were able to force a 3-&-out, and their offense took over on their own 34-yard line. After converting a 4th down to keep the drive alive, the Titans capped the possession with a 10-yard TD pass (shovel pass) from Allen to Adrean Lukeman.
The Titans were able to force and recover a Lawrenceburg fumble just before the half. Gibson Southern took a 21-7 lead to the locker room.
Gibson Southern opened the 2nd Half with a 61-yard drive with a 22-yard TD pass from Allen to Levi Dickerson, giving the Titans a 28-7 lead. The Tigers were able to strike back with a 76-yard TD connection from Garrett Yoon to Sr. WR Aiden Gilmour, cutting the GS lead to 28-14 with 9:00 remaining in the 3rd Quarter.
The Tigers were able to force a turnover on downs after GS drove inside the Lawrenceburg 20. The Titans defense was able to force a 3-&-out, and took over on their own 34. Lawrenceburg forced a GS punt, and the Tigers took over on their own 21, and then went 3-&-out. Gibson Southern took over on their own 41-yard line.
The Lawrenceburg defense was able to force a turnover on downs, and took over at their own 34-yard line. On a 4th-and-4 play from the GS 30, the Tigers struck with a 30-yard TD pass from Yoon to Dahya Patel with 11:06 remaining in the 4th Quarter. The 2-point conversion was good as Yoon found Patel to cut the GS lead to 28-22.
Following the Lawrenceburg kickoff, GS took possession at their own 31. Patel intercepted Allen’s pass, giving the Tigers possession at their own 30. Yoon connected with Patel for a 57-yard TD pass with 9:57 remaining. The PAT was good, and the Tigers took a 29-28 lead.
On the ensuing possession, GS had a 4th-&-9 on the Lawrenceburg 41, and Sr. DB Aiden Gilmour made a spectacular play on the ball, ranging over to break up a pass intended for GS Sr. WR Rory Heltsley.
The Titans were able to force a 3-&-out, and took over on their own 27. On the ensuing possession, Heltsley made several would-be tacklers miss, showing some elusiveness and nifty footwork on a tunnel screen, helping spark the Titans’ drive. Sr. TB Adrean Lukeman sparked the GS run game with several tough runs between the tackles throughout the night. PK Chris Spear booted through a 19-yard FG to give the Titans a 31-29 lead with 3:25 remaining.
On the ensuing possession, Lawrenceburg had a 4th-&-9 from their own 33, and converted, on a 34-yard pass from Yoon to Gilmour. Lawrenceburg then had a 4th-&-3, and GS was able to get the 4th down stop, and survived to win an instant classic, 31-29.
The Titans advance to take on Tri-West in the 3A South Semi-State.
