Recently we decided to spark the debate on twitter, who are the Top 5 Toughest Conferences for Indiana high school football. We decided to back some of it up with facts and have some fun by comparing these 5 conferences to the 5 power conferences in the FBS division of the NCAA.
Top 5 Toughest Conferences
1. Metropolitan – The MIC shares 24 State Championships. First ever 6A champion Warren Central has 8 State Championships. Carmel & Ben Davis have 7 total State Championships each, with Ben Davis as the only National Champion in 1991. Center Grove has 1 State Championship win and Pike has been a State Championship runner-up.
2. Hoosier Crossroads – Countless Sectional, Regional Champions and 6 State Championships among Brownsburg, Zionsville, Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers. Westfield the runner-up in the 2013 5A State Championship. Avon had its share of success with 4 regional titles. Often knocked out by the MIC teams, the HCC would have more banners.
3. Conference Indiana – Franklin Central leads the way with 4 State Championships with Bloomington South coming in second with 2 State Championships. Lawrence Central was apart of the conference during the State Championship run in 2012. In 2013 Southport went undefeated in regular season play. Columbus North made 3 Final Four appearances and named to Max Preps Top 15 Dynasty list. Newly added member Terre Haute won a Regional title last year.
4. Summit Athletic – Bishop Luers has made 15 State Championship appearances, winning 11 titles and a 4 year run in the mix of those 11 titles. Bishop Dwenger has 3 State Championships and was the 2013 4A title runner-up. Snider has made 6 title appearances most recently in 2012 with 1 lonely win in 1992. The conference has members representing class 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A to create a competitive mixture.
5. Cathedral’s Schedule – It’s known fact around the nation that the Cathedral Irish will play anyone, anywhere at anytime. For a team that plays all their games on the road and at various “home” locations, Cathedral has the toughest road to Lucas every year. This includes playing national powerhouses Trinity (KY), Saint Xavier (OH), Cincinnati Moeller (OH) and several MIC teams. The Irish have accounted for 11 State Championships.
