ANGOLA-Hornet Field witnessed pure Angola domination tonight as the Hornets stormed past Fairfield and the Wishbone Triple-Option 39-6.

Following a short kick by Fairfield, all Angola needed was one drive to get the party started and the Purple Craze (the Angola Student Section) jumping! The fans wearing the purple and gold, and repping the pride of Angola were loud from the opening kickoff!

Angola milked out nearly four minutes of clock before Andre Tagliaferri found green grass to the left side for a 15-yard touchdown run. That made it 7-0 Hornets early in the first quarter.

Initially, Fairfield had some momentum when Marco Garcia returned a kick for 51 yards to the Angola 39. But then Ethan Miller came out with a highlight reel tackle, and then a few plays later saw Angola recovering a fumble by Wyatt Maggart. On that ensuing drive, Tyler Call threw a 31-yard bomb to a wide open Sameer Ali, who records his first career touchdown catch as a senior. With 2:09 left 2Q, Angola led 13-0 after the PAT just missed.

The second quarter would be a repeat of the same as Ethan Miller came out with another emphatic tackle on Brecken Maran, and Angola continued to get excellent field position. Angola’s bid at three touchdowns on three drives was halted, when Tyler Call’s throw to the end zone was picked off by Hunter Kauffman. However, Fairfield spent most of the night struggling to find any room to run their wishbone with efficiency, and Angola’s defensive line pounded Fairfield’s banged up O-Line snap after snap.

When Angola was able to get the ball back from the Fairfield 34, they took advantage of it thanks to a Josh Kunkle touchdown run on 4th and 1. That made it 20-0 Angola with less than a minute to go in the first half. The first half saw Angola generating 189 yards of total offense to Fairfield’s 5 (-16 on the ground). Angola went on to produce 337 yards of total offense, and holding Fairfield to 90 yards (69 on the ground).

The third quarter saw Angola starting to pull away after another strong hit by Ethan Miller and some strong takedowns from Jake Land. Andre Tagliaferri connected on back-to-back 3Q scoring drives. The first came off a sweep at the 7:44 mark to make it 26-0. Then, after Jake Land forced a turnover on downs on 4th and very short, Tyler Call used his arm one more time on a 43-yard bomb to Andre to make it 33-0 with 6:42 left 3Q.

Tyler would add one more touchdown, this time on the ground, with 3:22 left in the 3Q to put this game on a running clock. Call went on to go 6-10 in the air for 118 yards and  2 TD’s, and 12 carries for 80 yards and another score. Tagliaferri ended up with 125 total yards on just 9 opportunities with the football and three touchdowns, which makes it 6 touchdowns in the last 2 weeks for Andre Tagliaferri.

Fairfield would eventually get a very late touchdown on a short Brecken Maran carry, but time expired before Fairfield ever had a chance to kick a PAT. With this win, Angola is guaranteeing at least a share of the Small School Division Title for the first time since their 12-1 2018 season.

4-2 Angola will make the long trip to Mishawka to face the 2-4 Mishawka Marian Knights. Angola will look to avenge last year’s 42-0 home loss to this Mishawka Marian team. 4-2 Fairfield, who is now on a two-game losing streak, will look to get back on track as they host 0-6 Garrett.
