IHSAA Boys Basketball: 2021 Class 4A State Championship Game Preview: Lawrence North v. Carmel

The Class 4A State Championship Game will, for the third consecutive State Tournament, be an all-MIC affair, as the Lawrence North Wildcats (28-2, # 3 in the final AP and IBCA Polls) and the Carmel Greyhounds (25-2, # 2 in the final AP and IBCA Polls) face off.

Each team earned a berth in the State Finals after close calls in Semi-State victories (Carmel defeating Gary West in Overtime, 53-50, while Lawrence North emerged in a thrilling game against Bloomington South, 54-52).

The Wildcats feature a plethora of weapons, several of which will be Division-I student-athletes.  Shamar Avance (6’1” Senior Guard and IBCA All-State Supreme 15 selection) leads the Lawrence North attack, averaging nearly 18 PPG, and 4+ APG.  Another key cog in the LN backcourt is CJ Gunn (6’5” Junior Guard, Indiana University commit, and IBCA Underclass All-State Supreme 15 selection).  Gunn enters this game averaging just shy of 14 PPG.  Rounding out the LN backcourt is 5’10” Senior Guard Kayden Beatty, who knocked down multiple three-pointers in the Wildcats’ Semi-State victory.

The LN frontcourt has multiple Division 1-athletes, including Donaven McCulley (6’5” Senior Forward, Indiana University Football signee, averaging 7+ PPG and just shy of 7 RPG).  Butler signee DJ Hughes (6’7” Senior Forward, and an IBCA Large School All-State selection) averages nearly 14 PPG in addition to nearly 8 RPG.

The Carmel Greyhounds are certainly no stranger to having a high level of success in the Class 4A State Tournament, and will be making their third consecutive appearance in the State Finals (seeking their second straight State Championship).

While Carmel possesses its typical stifling defense (allowing a shade over 40 PPG on the season), the Greyhounds’ offense is sparked by two double-digit per game scorers in 6’7” Senior G/F Brian Waddell (just shy of 16 PPG, and an IBCA All-State Supreme 15 selection) and 6’5” Junior Guard Peter Suder (nearly 12 PPG).  6’10” Junior Center Charlie Williams is the centerpiece of the Greyhounds’ frontcourt, averaging 7+ PPG and 4+ RPG.

Will Carmel be able to stifle the LN attack and claim another State Championship?, or will the Wildcats’ abundance of talent emerge victorious and give Coach Jack Keefer his fifth State Championship?

The final game of the 2020-2021 season will be capped off with what promises to be a fantastic game.
