This week’s SWIN Game of the Week featured the Evansville Memorial Tigers, the defending state champions in Class 4A, traveling to Bundrant Stadium to take on the host Evansville North Huskies.
The Tigers came into tonight looking to bounce back from a season-opening 14-3 defeat at Jasper, while the Huskies were looking to build upon a 14-7 home victory over Castle in its season opener.
Punts were exchanged on the first possession for each team. After that, though, the action quickly heated up, as the North Defense opened the scoring with a Safety with 1:24 remaining in the 1st Quarter, sacking the Tigers in the end zone after a bad snap.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Huskies until Brawdy connected with Hankins for a 7-yard TD pass (PAT Good) with 11:53 remaining in the 2nd Quarter, giving North a 9-0 lead. Following another Memorial punt, the Huskies used a little trickery to score another TD, as Mitchell connected with fellow WR Gehlhausen on a 61-yard TD pass (PAT Good) to extend the North lead to 16-0.
The Huskies Defense forced a turnover on downs, and then scored yet another touchdown prior to Halftime, as Hankins ran it in from 4 yards out (PAT Good) to give North a 23-0 lead heading into the locker room.
The Tigers got on the board with 5:16 remaining in the 3rd Quarter on a 34-yard TD pass, and also added a 1-yard TD run with 7:33 remaining in the 4th Quarter.
The Huskies, led by the offensive line opening up big holes, went primarily to the ground game in the second half, as Brawdy supplied an 8-yard TD run (PAT Good) with 9:25 remaining in the 4th Quarter. Tailback Capoleton Presswood capped the night with a 25-yard TD run (PAT Good) with 5:17 left in the game to make it 37-12 in favor of North.
The Huskies move to 2-0 on the season, and will travel to Harrison next week. The Tigers drop to 0-2, and will play Central in a neutral-site game (Bundrant Stadium) next week.
